Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing
I am trained to work with adults, adolescents and children using EMDR — a powerful, evidence-based therapy that helps people process and move through difficult or traumatic experiences.
About the therapy
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to briefly focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation — typically eye movements but adaptations can include tapping, drumming or other bilateral movements. This is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories.
Unlike some other therapies, EMDR does not require you to talk in detail about the distressing issue, nor does it involve homework between sessions. It works by helping the brain to process stuck memories so they no longer feel so overwhelming.
Areas of support
What EMDR can help with
EMDR can support those struggling with a range of difficulties, including:
- Re-experiencing traumatic memories or events
- Post-traumatic stress (PTSD and complex PTSD)
- Phobias and fears
- Anxiety and panic
- Depression
- Shame and low self-worth
- Emotional disconnection and dissociation
- Grief and loss
- Childhood trauma and adverse experiences
Who I work with
Who I work with
I offer EMDR to adults, adolescents and children. For younger clients, I adapt the approach to be developmentally appropriate, drawing on creative and play-based methods where helpful.
You do not need a formal diagnosis to benefit from EMDR. If you are carrying difficult memories, experiences or feelings that feel stuck, EMDR may be able to help.
The process
What to expect
Initial consultation
We begin with a thorough assessment to understand your history, your goals, and whether EMDR is the right approach for you. There is no pressure to share more than you feel ready to.
Preparation
Before processing begins, we spend time building a sense of safety and developing resources to help you manage any distress that may arise. This phase is as long as it needs to be.
Processing
Using bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements — we work through targeted memories at a pace that feels manageable. Many people notice a significant shift in how memories feel.
Integration
We close each session carefully, ensuring you feel grounded and settled before you leave. Over time, the aim is for difficult memories to feel less intrusive and impactful to your daily experiences.
Client experiences
What clients say about EMDR
Experiences shared by adults who have undertaken EMDR therapy with Sarah
Throughout our sessions, I always felt validated and never judged. Sarah created a space where I felt safe to experience and express whatever emotions came up, which was incredibly powerful and healing. For the first time, I felt able to fully engage with difficult memories and move through them rather than avoid them.
— Adult EMDR client
EMDR therapy has had a genuinely positive impact on my life. Having tried other forms of therapy in the past without feeling they had truly worked for me, I was unsure what to expect. From the very beginning, Sarah's calm and reassuring approach made me feel safe and supported. Her calming tone helped keep me present throughout the process, which allowed me to work through some significant traumas that I had previously felt unable to access or process.
— Adult EMDR client
Since beginning EMDR therapy, I have noticed meaningful changes in my daily life. Situations that would previously have left me feeling overwhelmed and anxious are becoming much more manageable. I have started to develop greater confidence in setting and maintaining healthy boundaries, and I feel more empowered to protect myself and prioritise my own wellbeing. Although I am still on my EMDR journey, I already feel calmer, less anxious, and more confident in myself.
— Adult EMDR client
The progress I have made so far has been significant, and I am incredibly grateful for Sarah's support, guidance, and expertise throughout the process. I would highly recommend her to anyone considering EMDR therapy.
